I write on behalf of the Trustees to thank you for the four specially embroidered golf shirts that you donated for the M'dala Trust Fundraising Golf Day, which was held on Thursday 15 October at the Durbanville Golf Club. We really appreciate your interest, concern and generosity, and there is no doubt that those who have won these top quality and unique shirts will be most excited. The golf day was a huge success and the nearly full field enjoyed a dry, but windy, afternoon. Fortunately the wet weather held off until twenty minutes after the last 4 Balls had completed their rounds. Each player received a ‘goody bag' at registration containing a variety of twelve interesting items such as a bottle of wine, golf ball and chocolates and we were able to award prizes down to the twentieth place and for the ‘nearest to the pin' on the four short holes. The fundraising raffle was also most successful - we had thirteen prizes that had a total value of R82,500. The four shirts together with a gourmet meal for four people, including an intimate wine tasting, at the Hartenberg Wine Estate was prize number six. The M'dala Trust supports 44 needy or destitute Zimbabwe pensioners who reside in the Western Cape and each month provides them all with a Pick 'n Pay gift card to the value of R900. Additionally the Trust arranges and finances cataract operations for the pensioners and provides hearing aids if needed. Our financial expenses each month are, as you can deduce, more than considerable. Making money these days is difficult and so it is particularly important to us that you so generously donated and gave us the support that we so much need. Thank you. Local Rhodesians get involved too, hence the 'Galloping Grannies' on the motor bikes - what a hoot!
Age has not deterred to Rhodie Sports Fanatics! We are to a person Rhodesians, and the first and only Pensioners Support Club for the Stormers Rugby Club, and from next month will be the first and only Pensioners Supporters Club for the Proteas (Springbok) Cricket Team.
When you think the average age is over 75, they are really amazing.

You are blessings and encouragers, and you have no idea how much you contribute mentally to the Pensioners as well, as they don't feel forgotten by the world.

I got the 8x10 portrait of PM Smith in the mail today, and to my surprise, it was quite something to see an autograph card included as well. I must say that I am still awe struck by the signature. Thank you so much for my exquisite Rhodesian rugby jerseys which arrived this morning. They must have come on a very slow boat, but were well worth the wait! They bring back some extremely happy memories of winter Saturday afternoons, watching the national side with my dad at the Police Grounds in Salisbury- you know, Rhodesia never lost a match when we went to see them play! I've been listening to Wrex Tarr in the car. Thank you! I haven't laughed so much for a very long time. It all brings back thoughts of a much happier time in that beautifull little corner of Africa!

We see this as a stop-gap operation to alleviate the suffering of those most severely affected by the cessation of pension payments from Zimbabwe - some since January 2001. We are hoping that the need for this type of support will fall away in the medium to long term, if the South African Government provides the Zimbabwe Government with a line of credit to ensure that forex is available for payment of Zimbabwe Government pensioners resident in South Africa, or when a change of government comes about in Zimbabwe. The Flame Lily Foundation has written letters appealing to both President Thabo Mbeki and Zimbabwe Finance Minister Herbert Murerwa to attend to the pensioners' needs before a major humanitarian crisis develops.
